The Cassaro

Traditionally known as the Cassaro, this street crosses the entire historic heart of Marsala, linking Porta Garibaldi and Porta Nuova. The term “Cassaro” comes from the Arabic word al-Qasr, meaning “castle street” or “main road”, indicating its historical importance. Walking along Via XI Maggio is like leafing through a book of architectural history: visitors pass elegant Baroque and Neoclassical façades, balconies decorated with flowers and wrought-iron railings, historic doorways, and hidden courtyards, each telling a story from Marsala’s past. Noteworthy buildings include numerous Baroque and Neoclassical noble palaces, such as Palazzo Spanò and Palazzo Grignani, now partially accessible for exhibitions and cultural events. Religious structures also stand along the way, notably the Chiesa del Collegio (formerly part of a Jesuit college) and its eighteenth-century cloister, and further along, the former church of San Giovannello, now used as a cultural space.

The street remains central to Marsala’s daily life, with artisan workshops, historic shops, and inviting cafés and restaurants that enliven the pedestrian area. During the day, visitors can appreciate architectural details, such as elaborate wrought-iron balconies decorated with flowers and antique portals, while historic shop signs discreetly blend into the façades. The street ends scenically at Piazza della Repubblica near Porta Garibaldi, facing the Cathedral and Palazzo VII Aprile; in the opposite direction, it leads visitors to Porta Nuova, framing an impressive view of sky and sea.

Today, two former churches along Via XI Maggio, including the former church of San Giovannello, have been converted into cultural spaces, frequently hosting art exhibitions and cultural activities. At night, Via XI Maggio becomes particularly charming, illuminated by soft lighting that accentuates historic buildings, and vibrant with life thanks to its cafés, restaurants, wine bars, and shops. This makes the Cassaro a favored spot for evening strolls. Thus, Via XI Maggio offers visitors an unforgettable experience—a walk through Marsala’s history, art, and contemporary city life.
